Are you sleeping soundly? Here are "10 Tips for a Good Night's Sleep" to help you get the best rest!

There's nothing quite like a good night's sleep. It's ideal to wake up feeling refreshed, full of energy, and ready to take on the world. However, a challenge in modern society is that millions of people are chronically sleep-deprived, and the quality of their sleep is compromised by various factors. Sleep deprivation can lead to numerous adverse effects, including impaired immune function, diabetes, cancer, obesity, depression, and memory impairment. Most people don't realize that chronic sleep deprivation negatively impacts their health and physique.

1. Take a lukewarm bath before bed

To fall into a deeper sleep more effectively, you need to lower your core body temperature. Taking a lukewarm bath at 38-40 degrees Celsius for about 15 minutes before bed warms your body. Then, as your body temperature gradually drops after the bath, it becomes easier to fall asleep and achieve a deeper sleep.

2. Get sunlight during the day

Getting enough sunlight during the day, especially in the morning, promotes the secretion of melatonin, a brain hormone essential for sleep at night. Melatonin plays a crucial role in regulating our sleep-wake rhythm. Aim for at least 30 minutes of natural sunlight during the day.

3. Avoid caffeine in the afternoon

Caffeine has a powerful stimulating effect that blocks the transmission of adenosine, a neurotransmitter with a sedative effect, in the brain. Caffeine is absorbed in about 30 minutes after ingestion, but it is said to take 5-7 hours for its concentration in the blood to halve. To achieve good, deep sleep, avoid caffeine in the afternoon.

4. Alcohol is the enemy of deep sleep

Alcohol can sometimes help you fall asleep more easily because it has a calming effect on the brain. However, consuming alcohol can lead to waking up in the middle of the night (middle-of-the-night awakening) or waking up early in the morning (early morning awakening). Acetaldehyde, produced when alcohol is broken down in the body, interferes with REM sleep, leading to a prolonged state of shallow non-REM sleep. Even if you feel like you've slept well after drinking alcohol, you've likely woken up many times unknowingly, and your sleep quality has not been good.

5. Darken your room before bed

By dimming the lights one hour before bedtime, the pineal gland, a small organ in the cerebrum, "turns on" and begins to produce the sleep hormone melatonin. Melatonin regulates the body's internal clock and biological rhythms, as well as the sleep/wake cycle. The secretion of melatonin helps the body temperature drop smoothly, allowing you to fall asleep.

6. Better sleep in a cool room

To fall asleep, your core body temperature needs to drop by about 1 degree Celsius.

The ideal temperature for sleep is approximately 25-27°C in summer and 19-23°C in winter, with humidity between 50-60%.

7. Wake up at the same time every day

Our brains and bodies prefer to follow the same daily routine. Waking up and being exposed to the morning sun resets our internal clock. As it gets dark, melatonin begins to be produced, initiating the induction of sleep. It's best if you can go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, but if that's not realistically possible, try to wake up at the same time as much as possible to keep your routine from getting disrupted.

8. Dark room = good sleep

It's a well-known fact that you sleep better in the dark. Research has shown that a completely dark room improves sleep quality. Even if you use an eye mask, your skin actually has light-sensing receptors. If there's light in your bedroom, your body detects it and communicates it to your brain and organs, disrupting your sleep cycle. Darken your room when you sleep! Make it pitch black!

9. Turn off technology one hour before bed

Phones and TVs emit blue light, which is a strong light that suppresses melatonin.

Using your phone before bed can lead to insufficient melatonin secretion, making it harder to fall asleep and reducing sleep quality.

10. Understand the value of sleep

For busy modern people, going to bed early might not be easy. You might inadvertently fail to get enough sleep. However, if a doctor prescribed a medicine that could help you live a healthy, long life and reduce the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and Alzheimer's, you'd jump at the chance, wouldn't you?

So, instead of making excuses for not being able to sleep early, let's learn the importance of sleep. Sleep is the best medicine.
